That is from The Last Airbender’s producer Frank Marshall. The Last Airbender, film due out next year, is being directed by M. Knight Shyamalan based on the Nickelodeon’s popular cartoon Avatar:The Last Airbender
Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a fantasy world that is home to humans, fantastic animals, and spirits. Human civilization is divided into four nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. Each nation has its own natural element, on which it bases its society. Within each nation exists an order called “Benders” who have the ability to manipulate the eponymous element of their nation. The show’s creators assigned each Bending art its own style of martial arts, causing it to inherit the advantages and weaknesses of the martial arts it was assigned. The Bending types are Waterbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Airbending. Wikipedia
The problem is Avatar is based on Asian culture and there are no Asian lead actors in the film. There is not alot of representations of minority in Hollywood as a whole but Asians really get next to nothing. It’s bad enough they get typecasted into certain roles, but taking away those roles completely? Especially from young Asian actors who would have loved the opportunity. Paramount dropped the ball here.
